Patty Hearst kidnapped

Heiress Patty Hearst was kidnapped on this day in 1974 by a small leftist group, The Symbionese Liberation Army. Demands of 2 million dollars of foodstuffs for the poor were met by her family, but Patty appeared to have joined her captors under the name of Tania. She was seen pointing a rifle during a hold up of a San Francisco bank shortly after informing her parents that she had joined the war for "the freedom of oppressed people." Authorities tracked the SLA to a hideout in Los Angeles, killing 5 members. Hearst was not present, and eventually returned to a more routine existence.
